Alberta's Top Fishing Locations: Lundbreck Falls
As one of the more beautiful locatons in Alberta, Lundbreck Falls is a popular roadside stop for travelers going to the Frank Slide or onward into B.C. For us Lundbreck Falls on the Crowsnest River is all about the fishing. Located at the intersection of Highway 22 (a.k.a. Cowboy Trail) and Highway 3 (a.k.a. Crowsnest Pass), just getting there is fun in itself. With beautiful scenery all the way along Highway 22, the road takes you right along the side of the Rocky Mountains. Turn westward upon reaching the intersection of Highway 3 and within moments Lundbeck Falls are within view from the highway. Turn into the parking lot and be prepared for one of Alberta's most beautiful sights.

The sound of the massive falls can be heard from the moment your vehicle stops in the parking lot. Even though we are here at least once a year, the first thing we do is to stand at the lookout point to view the falls in action. Looking from the top reviles a massively deep hole under the falls which leads to a number of decent looking holes downstream. Once we have taken in the sight and judged the water levels the time to put the fly fishing gear together has come. We will usually start out with a sinking leader along with a very short (4ft.) length of mono tied to a Clouser Minnow or another minnow pattern and start our decent to the falls. Being a major tourist location, getting down to the falls is really easy and can be accomplished by almost anyone. Keep your little ones close however as the base of the falls is really deep, the rocks slippery and the undertow overwhelming. Also take care when approaching the water at the base of the falls as almost every time we've been there a fish has been sighted at some point just in front of the rocks we like to cast from. Expectations are always high as most of the time we pull out an 18" or bigger trout. The base of Lundbreck Falls is also the known home of a monster bull trout.
As a popular tourist stop, the base of the falls is a very busy location during the summer months so if your are out during July and August the best time is early morning or later evening when the hordes of tourists are long gone. After you fish the falls head down stream for some more great fishing!
